Two primary things make shoes vegan: (1) they contain no leather or other skins, and (2) they are not made using any animal-based glue.

Various terms are used to describe the materials used for vegan shoes. These include vegan leather/suede, faux leather/suede, and micro-leather/micro-suede These materials are typically made from man-made microfibre.

While historically non-leather alternatives have received a bad rap for their toxicity and poor quality, among other things, modern production techniques mean that today's materials are far less environmentally damaging and of much higher quality. Polyurethane (PU) is commonly used, rather than the more toxic PVC, and many microfibres are produced using at least some portion of recycled materials. Furthermore, the newest forms use a water-based method to apply the PU to the fabric, rather than the highly toxic solvents that were traditionally used.

Microfibre fabric is lightweight, durable, and somewhat water repellant, so it makes a good substitute for leather. Microfibre is also made into Ultrasuede, which is cheaper and easier to clean and sew than natural suede leather.

Although there are some environmental concerns about microfibres entering the oceanic food chain via washing, this is not an issue with footwear and accessories, as these items are not washed.

All of Ecoture's carefully-selected vegan shoes are made from the highest-quality faux leathers and faux suedes. Our partner brands are focused not only on the vegan and cruelty-free aspects of their products, but also on their ethical and sustainability impacts.

More information on the materials, ethics and sustainability of the footwear industry can be found in our blog post, Is there something wrong with your shoes?

Will's Vegan Store uses high quality vegan leathers and suedes to make its footwear, so you will find your purchase requires little attention to keep it looking as good as new. It does not spoil or stain when it gets wet. In fact, Will's shoes perform really well in wet and muddy conditions and they're water resistant. This means you can wear them for extended periods of time in light rain, walk through shallow puddles or wet grass and have dry feet. We do not recommend wearing in deep puddles, running water or extended periods of heavy rain.

Will's footwear is easy to clean. Here are some general cleaning instructions:

Vegan leather uppers

Wipe down with warm water with a mild soap solution and a cloth or brush. To dry pad down with paper towels or a towel. Do not place too close to direct heat sources as this can damage the material. Polish can be used to bring out a shine and return colour. Any synthetic product should work just fine, apply as described in the instructions. It is recommended you test an inconspicuous area first.

Vegan suede uppers

Wait until dry then brush with a suede brush or something similar. For more extreme cases you can wipe down with warm water with a mild soap solution and a cloth or brush. To dry pad down with paper towels or a towel. Do not place too close to direct heat sources as this can damage the material. You should not expect water marks as the material does not mark or stain like conventional suede when it gets wet.

Please do not apply waterproof or other protective treatments, they are not necessary and can mark and damage the materials.

Good quality, BUT TAKE NOTE:

I reallyyyy wanted to give these 5 starts, and was so excited to be able to invest in a pair of vegan boots that looked like they'd go the distance, BUT unfortunately as much as I think they're mostly good, the design needs some serious tweaking:

- Firstly: The buckles are very unfortunately placed so that when you cross your legs (which I believe most us females do) it digs into the opposite leg... something so uncomfortable (bordering on painful at times!) that I have not been able to get used to it even after a few weeks now. I literally can't cross my legs properly because of it, and it's the first time ever I've not been able to do this due to my footware, so it's very annoying.

- And Secondly: although I have slightly larger than average calves (not a problem with these boots though - yay!) I have remarkably average sized ankles (they are neither on the small nor large side). So I was surprised to try these boots on and quickly notice that they were either designed for someone with VERY large ankles OR the proportions were way out, because there is so much room around the ankle area that the material bunches significantly there. Not only does it not look good, but also much more likely to damage the material sooner and decrease it's longevity. Plus it means I spend all day pulling them up.

The only reason I am not giving it less stars is because of the material, as I am grateful that they are available in the first place, because good quality vegan leather boots are…
