Why is International Women’s Day important to us? Well, firstly, because Ecoture is a business run by women.
We’ve experienced our share of gender-based discrimination, from being patronised by dude-bros at tech conferences, to ‘casual’ workplace harassment (pre-Ecoture, of course!) and beyond. We’ve questioned our abilities, worth, and safety.
This is not unique or groundbreaking. Talk to almost any woman and you will hear similar stories. But the thing is, we are women of privilege: white, tertiary educated, (relatively) abled-bodied, cis-gender, middle class women with access to capital to start a business. The challenges we face are only compounded for others by issues of age, race, socio-economic status, ability and gender diversity.
Secondly, the day is important to us because, while the fashion industry was one of the first in which women were permitted to make their mark, modern garment manufacturing relies upon the work of seriously underpaid women in developing countries. These women risk their personal safety, and all too often their lives, to churn out large volumes of fast fashion that end up in landfill after only a few wears.
We all benefit from the work that these women do, but it is both environmentally and socially unsustainable. Women deserve better. And we as a society have a responsibility to do better.
It’s why we believe that ethical fashion is the only way forward. It is also why we have partnered with i=Change just in time for its Shop for Change initiative on International Women’s Day. For 24 hours on Friday, 8 March we are committed to donating $5 from every purchase to help change the lives of women and children. With three causes to choose from, you choose where you want the donation to go and Ecoture will contribute. You can also boost the donation with an additional amount. Help us make a difference in the lives of others.
Women’s rights have been hard won, but for so many around the world, the fight continues. The themes of this year’s International Women’s Day highlight the importance of tackling gender issues as a whole community.
